Not for the faint of heart but good.

I think that 5.5 is a harsh score for such a good (maybe not a word that applies to this story, as it is sheer "horror" but...) adaption of the book (it should be noted that it is not an exact replication of the story in the book). 7 out of 10, not for the story but for the job done in making it. A lot of people love to hate on Mr. Franco it would seem, personally I don't get it but that's their business I reckon. What I can talk about is his direction of this movie and, in my opinion, he did a great job with the material. Like I said the story is sheer horror and selected (selected audience that is) viewing is HIGHLY recommended. Perhaps only people familiar with the book should watch this film, seriously it's not for the faint of heart. The acting is excellent all round, especially Mr. Haze's performance as Lester Ballard, scary stuff indeed. Locations are beautiful and the scene (props etc.) is set very well. All in all, a "good" film for people that like disturbing movies.

It's pointless

The movie is not entirely terrible but it did feel entirely pointless. It mostly centers around a man who does disturbing things and that's basically it. The sheriff knows that he is up to something and tries to catch him. There didn't really seem to be any real story behind it. I didn't find myself caring about any of the characters in the movie at all. If you are seeing the movie because of James Franco, I would not bother because he is barely in the movie. I have no idea why he is listed as a star of the movie. His is a bit part at best. There were a couple of interesting points in the movie, but for the most part, it is definitely not a movie worth seeing at all. Definitely skip this one and see something else.

Very embarrassing for Franco

Complete vanity project, inside and out. There was maybe 10 minutes of movie here about an interesting character that should have been a supporting role in something else. It did not carry a whole film. No real story. Vignettes. Severely mentally ill man in the 1960s forced to live in the forest in the mid-west (really thought it looked like the '30s). In loneliness he has sex with a dead girl. After mild harassment from the Sheriff that he probably had dozens of times, he turns into a serial killer. Some very brief macabre elements that were interesting. Scott Haze in the lead was good with what he had to work with, albeit not much. But Franco casting himself in a bit part near the end was ridiculous and distracting. Even more embarrassing was slapping him on the box of the DVD as a co-lead. My theory was that was the distributor, a Chinese company, making a sloppy decision. Just a whole lotta nothing. Don't bother. Many other acceptable and OK movies you could be less disappointed in.
