90s style disaster film has plenty of action, but is bloated and routine

Joining the spate of 1990s natural disaster films ("Twister," "Dante's Peak," "Armageddon," "The Perfect Storm," etc.) Sylvester Stallone has to rescue a group of people trapped in a NYC tunnel collapse. Yep, that's pretty much it. Sly fends off raging water, explosion, giant fans, and all manner of destruction while working to save a collection of New York character clichés. The film was directed by Rob Cohen, who gave us "XXX" and the original of the Fast and the Furious films, so he certainly knows his way around an action sequence, but the story and characters are so weak that the film is merely one set pieces followed by another. That's not necessarily a bad thing (it's essentially the formula for the Tom Cruise Mission Impossible films), but this film felt too formula and routine to really stand out. Supporting actors in the film included Amy Brenneman, Viggo Mortensen, Barry Newman, Dan Hedaya, Claire Bloom, Danielle Harris, and Stan Shaw. Meh.

Disaster Movies Meet Stallone

For the first (and so far only) time in his career, Sylvester Stallone tackles the disaster movie genre with "Daylight" and crafts a surprisingly effective and poignant film. For a basic plot summary, "Daylight" focuses on the collapse of the New York-New Jersey tunnel. When the tunnel collapses due to a chemical explosion, only Kit Latura (Stallone) has the knowledge/skills necessary (as the former transportation chief) to breach the collapse and try to rescue a small band of survivors. What really works in this film is the character development. Before the main plot is set in motion, viewers are given some background information on each of the characters that ultimately will battle to escape the collapse. Thus, by the end, you'll truly be rooting for the characters to succeed in their monumental task. About the only thing that fails to work in this movie is director Rob Cohen's attempts to create un-needed drama. The underlying backstory of Latura only serves to create unrealistic, reactionary drama, while a Die Hard-like theme of "greedy, arrogant police chief" permeates the drama/action. All of this would have been completely unnecessary, and actually drags down the overall effectiveness of the film, as a few scenes will make you roll your eyes. Overall, though, is is a solid film that is one of Stallone's best. A more accurate rating would be 3.5 stars, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt for the thrills and emotional moments it provided me.

The Critics were wrong as usual.

Disaster in a New York tunnel as explosions collapse both ends of it. One hero tries to help the people inside find their way to safety. Starring Sylvester Stallone Daylight is a 1996 Action, Adventure, Drama that as usual critics hated cause Sly plays a Taxi Driver that happens to be there when the Tunnel collapsed that's like saying that John McClane played by Bruce Willis was a dumb character because he was at the building the time when people started getting shot that makes zero sense this was an action movie same goes for Daylight which is a very good action film with a really good performance by Stallone and overall the whole cast did nice job, the action sequences looked nice the same goes for the cgi but by far the best death in the film was Viggo Mortensen's character i just couldn't stand that guy he thought he was some big shot and crap like that guess what you fool Gandalf wasn't there to protect you was he? Like i said this is a very good film, powerful and also good when Drama is needed and you should totally give it a 2nd look it's worth it forget the critics judge for yourselves!!
