Laziness spoiled an otherwise good movie

The movie was good all the way up until the second-half of the movie. It very much reminded me of Last House on the Left. Writing towards the end got lazy and sloppy to the point where the plot holes really started to sink the movie for me. For instance, the part where Beth flips the SUV and the cop musters up the strength to come check on her notably without calling for backup or reporting what's going on. Or there's the part in the hospital where they're doing life-saving, emergency surgery, extracting bullet fragments from this girl's cheek and yet she's not even under? And she's just conscious enough to scribble out on a random and convenient white board? And the brother that spends much of the movie with a life-threatening wound that should have probably killed him, looks good as new months later when in reality he portably would've contracted some kind of infection and died.

Wow! This movie is a lot

PROS: If I look at this movie from only a technical stand point there was a few things that had great potential. To start of, the action scenes were shot and directed very well. The suspense in each scene was well realized and well thought out. The benefit from this was a movie that was engaging, no matter how many times one looked away. To add on, the actors in this film were rather good. Screaming is easy, but real pain is different. The actors really pulled off their role. Another part that was helpful was a detailed set. The set and place were well materialized. You were put in a place that you've never scene before, and at the end of the movie you practically knew the house like the back of your hand. CONS: The sheer amount of worthless violence in this movie was sickening. The movie had a strong enough plot in it to do away with all the torture. It didn't help the watcher nor did it become an actualized part of the movie. After the amount of torture and violence in the film there was practically no where to go. The director dead locked himself in a way that the ending was insignificant and poorly designed. He fell into a cliché that was not needed or wanted, but there was no other way for the movie to become substantial. And to top it all off, the goals that each character had was forgotten as the film progressed due to torture being the driving force of the movie.

An above average thriller

When I saw that Darren Lynn Bousman (director of 'Saw 2, 3 & 4') had done another horror/thriller film which had been received well I knew I had to see it. I have to say it was a very different film to that which I was expecting, but I certainly enjoyed it nonetheless. The opening scene of the film (a very well done scene by the way) heavily implies that the tone will lean very much in the direction of horror. In reality though this plays out much more like a situational thriller, and only really some strong moments of violence put it in any way into the horror category. The film's biggest strength is its story arc. With the exception of the opening scene the story starts out very mild tempered and even gets into a bit of a lull at about the halfway point. Then things pick up slowly and evenly and it all builds to an electric final 30 minutes. I really liked this way of telling the story because it makes everything that happens in the end that much more satisfying. There's actually a lot going on here. I was surprised how strong some of the characters turned out to be. That's very rare in these types of films. The character of 'Mother' in particular was quite brilliant and acted like a glue to hold the entire film together. I was thoroughly impressed by 'Mother's Day' and would definitely recommend it if you get the chance to see it.
